My Philosophy of Teaching

"The goal of teaching is to develop lifelong learners that situate each student with the assets they bring to the classroom."

Main points:

  • My teaching is centered on building positive relationships with students   and colleagues.

  • Every student has assets that they can contribute to the classroom.

  • Teachers and students teach and learn.

  • Education means more than just 'math'.  Education is learning to be part of a classroom community that values respect and open-mindedness.

  • The classroom is a safe space to make mistakes and learn from them--I make mistakes too!

  • Knowledge is co-constructed; cooperative learning is fundamental in this class to teach students the critical life skill of collaboration.

  • A solution is not enough: Can you tell us why your answer works and why it matters?
What does that answer mean in the real-world?

  • In my class, every student can be successful--if you persevere, ask questions, and maintain a growth mindset!

"Effective teachers do not simply teach; they inspire, motivate, and engage in the learning process

alongside their students to co-construct knowledge."
